Hawaiian Big Island Completely Submerged in Pacific Ocean!

HAWAII, HI. The biggest island of the Hawaiian islands has now been completely destroyed by the Kilauea Volcano which erupted earlier this month on May 3rd. The last time this volcano erupted was for a devastating several months in 2014. However, this eruption has proven to be much more serious.

Luckily, nobody has been killed, and every Hawaiian resident on the Big Island have been evacuated to safety. However, the spewing ash and fiery hot lava have wreaked havoc on the many structures and homes on the island. Not only has this lava destroyed hundreds of homes, it has completely engulfed the island, pushing it down into the Pacific Ocean.

According to scientist Jacob Smith, this process was triggered by forces due to underground volcanic activity. These force waves disrupt the flow of magma in the Earth's mantle to create a cool spot which sinks, causing an artificial subduction zone or caldera to form around the island, lowering the entire section of the Earth's crust containing the island below the ocean.

Thousands of people are devastated by this recent news, knowing that they will never be able to return to their home island. When we talked to Hawaii resident Janet Moore, she said "I just want to go home. It puts quite a financial and emotional strain on all of us as we try to recover from this tragedy and figure out where to go next."

An organization was started to raise funds for families who lost everything in this recent tragedy. You can donate to this organization at www.OneLessHawaiianIsland.org
